The remote Mahale Mountains, at the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, are home to the largest population of wild chimpanzees in Africa. Rainforest covers the Mahale mountains down to deserted sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. This is a truly remote and wild area that you can only explore by foot and access by plane or boat. Go where only a few people go and get up close to these fascinating chimps.

From rainforest to beaches

Mahale Mountains National Park’s is just over 600 sq. km and has various ecological zones. It is mainly lush, green and hilly with rainforest, montane forest, savannah and miombo woodlands. Tumbling waterfalls, wild flowers, deep valleys and mountain peaks towering over the sandy beaches with clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. No wonder this national park is stunningly beautiful and attracts a great diversity of wildlife due to the different eco-zones.

Mahale chimpanzees

Mahale is first of all famed for its chimpanzees, which number to about a thousand, split between 14 groups. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to track and observe the chimps in the forest. Go on a walking safari and watch them forage, play and interact with each other. There are also many other animals that live in the forest paradise of Mahale. These include colobus monkeys, squirrels, porcupine, grysbok, mongoose and beautiful birds and butterflies. Furthermore on the savannahs, you can see mammals such as lions, giraffes, zebras and in the miombo woodlands several species of antelope.

Lake Tanganyika

This lake in western Tanzania is the longest, deepest and second largest freshwater lake in the world. Therefore it is the perfect location for all kind of adventurous activities. The water of Lake Tanganyika is so clear and full of unique fresh water fish. Enjoy a fishing or snorkelling trip or explore Lake Tanganyika by canoe or kayak. At the centre of the lake you can relax on private islands with exclusive white sandy beaches. The views of the lake with the Mahale Mountains in the background are spectacular.
