Kenya safari: what to know

Kenya safari: where the modern safari began, with some of Africa's most reliable wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu.

Kenya is where the modern safari began, and it still offers some of the most reliable wildlife viewing in Africa within a few hours of an international airport.

The Maasai Mara, in the south-west, is the northern extension of the Serengeti. The wildebeest migration is there from roughly July to October, and lion, leopard and cheetah are resident all year. The community conservancies around the reserve limit vehicle numbers and allow walking and night drives. Amboseli, on the Tanzanian border, is known for large-tusked elephants and the classic view of Kilimanjaro. Further north, Samburu and Laikipia have dry-country species such as Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.

Kenya and Tanzania combine well. The Namanga border post links Amboseli with Arusha in a few hours, and the Isebania crossing connects the Mara with the northern Serengeti. Most nationalities need an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before departure.

The dry months of June to October and January to February are best for game viewing. Long rains fall in April and May.
