Tanzania wildlife safari: what to know

A wildlife safari is built around game drives: slow journeys through a national park in a 4x4 with a pop-up roof, led by a driver-guide who knows where animals are likely to be and how to read their behaviour.

A typical day starts at first light, when predators are still active, and returns to camp for the hot middle hours before going out again until sunset. Some days are spent entirely in the park with a picnic lunch.

In northern Tanzania the usual route links Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti over five to ten days. The southern parks, Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi, add boat and walking safaris and see far fewer visitors.

The safaris below differ in length, route and level of accommodation. Any of them can be adjusted to your dates and budget.

Lioness snarling in the dry grass

What to know before you go

  1. Male lion with a dark mane standing in golden grassland at sunset

What to expect on a Tanzania wildlife safari

Days start early, when animals are most active, with a pause at midday and a second drive in the late afternoon. Your guide reads tracks, listens for alarm calls and positions the vehicle for the best light. Most guests see elephants, lions, giraffes and huge herds of plains game within the first two days.

  2. Lioness lying on a weathered dead tree

    Where and when to go

The northern circuit is the classic route: Tarangire for elephants, the Serengeti for big cats and the Ngorongoro Crater for black rhino. June to October is dry and easy, but every month has something; our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania explains each one.

  3. Lioness asleep on a fallen tree trunk in the dry grass

    Who it suits

First-time visitors, families and anyone who wants to see the Big Five. Five to eight days is a good length, and it combines easily with Zanzibar.

Questions about Wildlife Safari

Wildlife Safari: how many days do I need?

Our Wildlife Safari trips run from 1 to 18 days, and most guests choose about 8. Fewer days mean more time on the road; more days let you slow down and stay longer where the animals are.

Wildlife Safari: when is the best time to go?

The best time is June to October, and January to February. Every month has something, though, so read our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Wildlife Safari: how much does it cost?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the lodges you choose. We send a clear, all-inclusive proposal for your dates within 24 hours, and our guide to the cost of a Tanzania safari explains the main costs.

Wildlife Safari: can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Zanzibar is about an hour's flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro is an hour's drive from Arusha. See our Zanzibar holidays and Kilimanjaro routes.

Wildlife Safari: is the trip private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, with your own vehicle and guide, and we adapt the route, the lodges and the pace to you. Start with the trip planner or contact us.

Shall we plan your trip?

Tell us your dates and what you would like to see. A specialist in Arusha sends a route and a clear proposal within 24 hours.
