Luxury Tanzania safari: what to know

On safari, luxury is mostly a matter of space, privacy and time. The best camps in Tanzania are small, often fewer than a dozen tents or suites, and are placed in parts of the parks where you see few other vehicles.

What you can expect at this level: a private 4x4 and guide, so you decide how long to stay at a sighting; flights between parks in light aircraft, which turn a seven-hour drive into a 45-minute hop; large tented suites or lodge rooms with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms; and food and drink included. Many camps add guided walks, night drives or meals out in the bush.

Luxury safaris are also the easiest to shape around particular interests, such as photography, a honeymoon, or travelling with children or grandparents. The itineraries below are starting points. Tell us what matters to you and we will adjust the route, the camps and the pace.

What to know before you go

  1. Resort pool, loungers and thatched shades in a tropical garden

What to expect on a luxury Tanzania safari

Luxury on safari is about space and time: a private vehicle and guide, small camps in prime areas and the freedom to stay with a sighting as long as you like. Light aircraft flights replace long drives, and many camps add private dinners, spa treatments and walks.

  2. Lion silhouetted in golden morning mist

    Where and when to go

The best luxury camps sit in the Serengeti, on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and in remote southern parks such as Ruaha. Peak months book up a year ahead, so plan early for July to October.

  3. Two lionesses walking side by side

    Who it suits

Honeymooners, special celebrations and travellers who want the best guiding and the fewest vehicles. See our luxury safaris and what a safari really costs.

Questions about Luxury Safari

Luxury Safari: how many days do I need?

Our Luxury Safari trips run from 8 to 12 days, and most guests choose about 9. Fewer days mean more time on the road; more days let you slow down and stay longer where the animals are.

Luxury Safari: when is the best time to go?

The best time is June to October, and December to March. Every month has something, though, so read our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Luxury Safari: how much does it cost?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the lodges you choose. We send a clear, all-inclusive proposal for your dates within 24 hours, and our guide to the cost of a Tanzania safari explains the main costs.

Luxury Safari: can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Zanzibar is about an hour's flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro is an hour's drive from Arusha. See our Zanzibar holidays and Kilimanjaro routes.

Luxury Safari: is the trip private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, with your own vehicle and guide, and we adapt the route, the lodges and the pace to you. Start with the trip planner or contact us.

Shall we plan your trip?

Tell us your dates and what you would like to see. A specialist in Arusha sends a route and a clear proposal within 24 hours.
