Tanzania trekking: what to know

Tanzania has the highest mountain in Africa and several others that would be famous anywhere else.

Kilimanjaro, 5,895 m, is a trek, not a technical climb. There are seven established routes taking five to nine days. The choice of route and the number of days matter more than fitness, because altitude is what stops most people, and longer itineraries give the body time to adjust.

Mount Meru, 4,566 m, near Arusha, takes three or four days. The trail climbs through forest with giraffe and buffalo to a narrow ridge around the crater rim. It is quieter than Kilimanjaro and is excellent preparation for it.

Ol Doinyo Lengai, close to 3,000 m, is an active volcano above Lake Natron, climbed overnight for sunrise at the crater. It is short, steep and demanding.

Every trek includes licensed mountain guides, porters, a cook, park fees, and tents or huts on the mountain. The best months are January to mid-March and June to October.

What to know before you go

  1. Climbers walking along the Kilimanjaro crater rim at sunrise beside a glacier

What to expect on Tanzania trekking

Tanzania's mountains are walks rather than technical climbs, but altitude makes them demanding. A licensed guide sets a slow pace, a cook prepares fresh meals and porters carry the camp. On longer climbs your guide checks your oxygen and pulse twice a day.

  2. Climbing tents at a high camp below the summit of Kilimanjaro

    Where and when to go

Kilimanjaro is the big goal; Mount Meru is a superb warm-up with wildlife; Ol Doinyo Lengai is climbed in a single night. January to early March and June to October are the driest months.

Questions about Mountain Trekking

Mountain Trekking: how many days do I need?

Our Mountain Trekking trips run from 1 to 11 days, and most guests choose about 7. Fewer days mean more time on the road; more days let you slow down and stay longer where the animals are.

Mountain Trekking: when is the best time to go?

The best time is January to early March, and June to October. Every month has something, though, so read our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Mountain Trekking: how much does it cost?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the lodges you choose. We send a clear, all-inclusive proposal for your dates within 24 hours, and our guide to the cost of a Tanzania safari explains the main costs.

Mountain Trekking: can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Zanzibar is about an hour's flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro is an hour's drive from Arusha. See our Zanzibar holidays and Kilimanjaro routes.

Mountain Trekking: is the trip private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, with your own vehicle and guide, and we adapt the route, the lodges and the pace to you. Start with the trip planner or contact us.

Shall we plan your trip?

Tell us your dates and what you would like to see. A specialist in Arusha sends a route and a clear proposal within 24 hours.
