Tanzania safari: Tanzania sets aside more than a third of its land for conservation, more than almost any other country in Africa.
Tanzania sets aside more than a third of its land for conservation, more than almost any other country in Africa. That land includes the Serengeti and its wildebeest migration, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, and Nyerere and Ruaha, two of the largest national parks on the continent.
Most first safaris follow the northern circuit from Arusha: Tarangire for elephants, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, usually over six to ten days. The southern circuit, reached from Dar es Salaam, covers Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi and adds boat and walking safaris with far fewer vehicles. In the far west, Gombe and Mahale offer chimpanzee trekking on the shore of Lake Tanganyika.
Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 m, can be climbed without technical skills in five to nine days. Zanzibar is a flight of about an hour from the northern parks and is the usual end to a trip.
The main dry season, June to October, is the most popular time for wildlife. January to March is also dry in the north and is calving season in the southern Serengeti. English is widely spoken in tourism, the currency is the Tanzanian shilling, and US dollars are accepted for most safari costs.
