Great Migration safari: what to know

The Great Migration is the year-round movement of about 1.3 million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebra around the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, following the rain and the grass it brings. It has no start or finish. What matters for planning is where the herds are in the month you travel.

December to March: the herds are on the southern Serengeti plains and around Ndutu. Most calves are born in a few weeks around February.

April to June: they move north-west through the central Serengeti and the Western Corridor, where they cross the Grumeti River.

July to October: they are in the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, crossing the Mara River back and forth.

November: they return south with the short rains.

A migration safari places you in the right part of the park for your dates, in a lodge or in a mobile camp that moves with the herds. The routes are approximate, since the animals follow the rain, so we plan with recent sightings in mind.

What to know before you go

  1. Zebras and wildebeest gathered together on the plains

What to expect on a Great Migration safari

The herds are never still, so a migration safari is planned around where they are likely to be in your month. Your guide follows recent reports from other guides and rangers, and camps that move with the herds keep you close to the action. Expect vast columns of wildebeest and zebra, and the predators that follow them.

  2. Wildebeest herd crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration

    Where and when to go

From December to March the herds calve around Ndutu; from April to June they move through the central and western Serengeti; from July to October they cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. Our migration guide follows them month by month.

  3. Wildebeest crossing a rocky river during the migration

    Who it suits

Anyone who wants one of the great wildlife events on Earth. Crossings need patience: allow at least three nights in the north. Read how the Serengeti compares with the Masai Mara.

Questions about Great Migration

Great Migration: how many days do I need?

Our Great Migration trips run from 6 to 16 days, and most guests choose about 10. Fewer days mean more time on the road; more days let you slow down and stay longer where the animals are.

Great Migration: when is the best time to go?

The best time is All year: the herds move with the seasons. Every month has something, though, so read our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Great Migration: how much does it cost?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the lodges you choose. We send a clear, all-inclusive proposal for your dates within 24 hours, and our guide to the cost of a Tanzania safari explains the main costs.

Great Migration: can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Zanzibar is about an hour's flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro is an hour's drive from Arusha. See our Zanzibar holidays and Kilimanjaro routes.

Great Migration: is the trip private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, with your own vehicle and guide, and we adapt the route, the lodges and the pace to you. Start with the trip planner or contact us.

Shall we plan your trip?

Tell us your dates and what you would like to see. A specialist in Arusha sends a route and a clear proposal within 24 hours.
