Tanzania family safari: what to know

A safari is one of the best trips a family can take together, provided it is planned around the children and not the other way round.

What makes a family safari work: a private vehicle, so you can stop when someone is tired or stay longer with the elephants; drives of three to four hours at a time, not full days; lodges with family rooms or adjoining tents, and ideally a pool for the afternoon; and at least two nights in each place.

In northern Tanzania, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater are good choices for younger children because animals are easy to find and distances are short. Older children and teenagers generally cope well with the longer drive to the Serengeti. Ending with a few days on a Zanzibar beach gives everyone a rest.

On age: children of six and over tend to get the most from a safari. Some lodges set a minimum age, and walking safaris usually require children to be at least 12. Tanzania is a malaria area, so speak to a travel clinic about prevention for children well before you travel.

What to know before you go

  1. Elephants walking through long green grass

What to expect on a Tanzania family safari

We plan shorter drives, longer breaks and camps with family tents, pools and space to play. A private vehicle means you stop when the children need to, and many guides run junior ranger activities about tracks, birds and insects.

  2. Giant baobab tree with an elephant on the red earth

    Where and when to go

Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater are close together, so travel days are short. School holidays in July, August and December are popular, so book early.

  3. Elephants walking beneath yellow fever trees on bright green grass

    Who it suits

Families with children from about six years old. Some camps set minimum ages for walks. Our safety guide answers parents' usual questions.

Questions about Family Safari

Family Safari: how many days do I need?

Our Family Safari trips run from 5 to 5 days, and most guests choose about 5. Fewer days mean more time on the road; more days let you slow down and stay longer where the animals are.

Family Safari: when is the best time to go?

The best time is June to October, and December to February. Every month has something, though, so read our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Family Safari: how much does it cost?

The price depends on the season, the number of people and the lodges you choose. We send a clear, all-inclusive proposal for your dates within 24 hours, and our guide to the cost of a Tanzania safari explains the main costs.

Family Safari: can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Zanzibar is about an hour's flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, and Kilimanjaro is an hour's drive from Arusha. See our Zanzibar holidays and Kilimanjaro routes.

Family Safari: is the trip private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, with your own vehicle and guide, and we adapt the route, the lodges and the pace to you. Start with the trip planner or contact us.

Shall we plan your trip?

Tell us your dates and what you would like to see. A specialist in Arusha sends a route and a clear proposal within 24 hours.
