Moshi Tanzania: what to know

Moshi is the town at the southern foot of Kilimanjaro and the base for most climbs. It lies at about 900 m, lower and warmer than Arusha, and on a clear morning the snow on Kibo fills the northern sky from the main street. Kilimanjaro International Airport is roughly 40 km away, about 45 minutes by road.

What to know before you go

  1. Climbers walking along the Kilimanjaro crater rim at sunrise beside a glacier

    Before and after a climb

Climbers normally spend a night here before starting, for a gear check and a briefing with their guide, and at least one night afterwards. The Machame, Umbwe and Marangu gates are all within about an hour of town. Moshi has outfitters that rent sleeping bags, poles and warm layers if you would prefer not to carry them from home.

  2. Climbers walking towards the summit of Kilimanjaro at dawn

    Day trips from Moshi

The village of Materuni, on the mountain's lower slopes, combines a walk through banana and coffee farms to an 80-metre waterfall with a hands-on coffee session run by Chagga families: you pound, roast and brew your own cup. Chemka (Kikuletwa) hot springs is a clear, warm spring-fed pool under fig trees in the dry plains south of town. Marangu has more waterfalls and Chagga caves once used as refuges, and Lake Chala is a crater lake on the Kenyan border with walking trails down to the water.

Questions about Moshi (Kilimanjaro)

Is Moshi or Arusha better for Kilimanjaro?

Moshi. It is closer to the mountain gates and the airport, and most climbs start from here. Arusha makes more sense if you are going straight on safari.

Can you see Kilimanjaro from Moshi?

Yes, when the weather is clear. The summit is most often visible at sunrise and again near sunset, and is usually hidden by cloud in the middle of the day.

What can I do in Moshi without climbing?

Materuni waterfall and coffee tour, Chemka hot springs, Marangu village and waterfalls, Lake Chala, and a one-day hike on the Shira Plateau or to Mandara Hut.

Shall we plan your trip?
