About the mountain

Mount Hanang hike: what to know

Mount Hanang hike: An extinct volcano and one of Tanzania's highest mountains, climbed in one or two days from Katesh. You will often have it to yourself.

Mount Hanang rises to 3,420 m above the plains of Manyara Region, south-west of Arusha, and is usually counted as the fourth-highest mountain in Tanzania. It is an extinct volcano protected as the Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve, managed by the Tanzania Forest Service.

Off the beaten track Very few visitors climb Hanang, and you will usually share the mountain only with local herders. The area is home to the Barbaig, semi-nomadic pastoralists known for their cattle and their distinctive dress.

Two routes The Jorodom route climbs from the town of Katesh on the southern side and is the usual way up. The shorter Barjomot route starts from the north, near the village of Gitting. Both can be done in a long day, or over two days with a night camping on the mountain.

From the summit the view takes in Lake Basotu, the Rift Valley escarpment and the plains stretching towards Tarangire.

FAQs

Questions about Mount Hanang

How long does it take to climb Mount Hanang?

The Jorodom route from Katesh is usually climbed in one long day of eight to ten hours there and back. Splitting it over two days with a night camping on the mountain makes it far more relaxed.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Hanang is a nature forest reserve, and climbers pay a fee and climb with a local guide. We arrange both.

Can Hanang be combined with a safari?

Yes. Katesh is a few hours' drive from Tarangire and Lake Manyara, so a Hanang climb fits well before or after a northern safari.
